Cleveland Elder Law Attorney Elizabeth L. Perla Accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has welcomed Cleveland elder law attorney Elizabeth L. Perla as an accredited attorney for the preparation, presentation, and prosecution of claims for veterans benefits before the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Veterans benefits programs can provide significant help in paying for long term care costs.

For example, Veterans may qualify for service-connected disability, a compensation available to disabled veterans or the surviving spouse or dependent of a veteran, if the veteran’s disability or death was incurred during military service, a pre-existing condition was aggravated by military service, the disease or disability is presumed to be a result of military service (which is dictated by statute), a secondary condition occurred due to a service-connected disability, or the veteran was the victim of medical malpractice committed by the VA. Disability benefits are not based on financial need.

In addition, Veterans may qualify for a pension benefit, a need-based benefit payable to a disabled veteran or disabled spouse or dependent child whose income and assets fall within a particular range.  The disability need not be the result of military service.  Instead the Veteran need only have the requisite military service, be over age 65 or be otherwise disabled, and have particular care needs.
